Keeping Memories: The Rwandan Community in the UK
October 2011 – October 2013 Keeping Memories was conceived in partnership with the West Midlands Rwandan Community Association. Ten Rwandan people living in the UK were extensively interviewed regarding the 1994 genocide and helped us to explore themes of childhood, legacies of colonialism, prejudice, ignorance, forgiveness and reconciliation, looking at how the past relates to the present. The output was then developed into an exhibition, using audio, text, photographs and paintings to convey the unique perspective of each story.
The free exhibition toured the UK and culminated in the release of a full colour book for sale entitled Keeping Memories: Rwandans in the UK. A set of free teaching resources for use in schools was also released and since then has benefitted tens of thousands of students.
